![]() ![]() I can get why she might not want to take her meds which turn off the hallucinations. Within four years, she has to deal with the loss of both parents and her best friend. Her obsession with escapism is understandable. The “movies in her mind” warp reality whenever things get tough, which means not even she always knows if what she’s experiencing is real or not. As a narrator, though, Charlie is fascinating.Īs we learn more about her, we understand just how unstable her mental state is. ![]() She’s overly dramatic and pretty snobby when it comes to her one interest in life. Would I be friends with her in real life? Probably not. As a person, I admit that Charlie is only so so. Our quirky movie nerd who is struggling so hard to live (in more ways than one). The unreliable narratorįirst off, I have to talk about Charlie. I picked out a few things that I liked the most to highlight what makes the book special. ![]() ![]() It wasn’t the perfect book, but it was fun, and once it got going, boy, did it get going. (If you’d like to check it out, head on over to the publisher’s website!) What worked Set in the ’90s, what would happen when a girl was trapped in a car with a stranger who just might be a serial killer? There will be spoilers ahead, so if you haven’t read the book yet, be warned. I wanted something maybe a little spooky and full of mystery, so it seemed like the perfect choice when I stumbled on Survive the Night by Riley Sager. For October, I was looking for something a little different from my usual book picks. ![]()

![]() ![]() ![]() Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.īut his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. It’s been awhile since I’ve written a messy review so I’m going to have a bit of fun with this one. ![]() It was inadequate, mediocre, and extremely displeasing. Presenting…… Maxim Trevelyan! I getting ahead of myself. Anybody? You guys don’t like that? If you’re into that kind of thing, I have the perfect man (book boyfriend) for you. Rise your hand if you like guys who fuck their dead brother’s wives. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Not only were there several laugh-out-loud moments, there was one scene that was hysterical, enough so that I found myself having a laughing fit at 1 a.m. The family dynamic was wonderful, too, and the interactions between Chastity and her brothers, with the sisters-in-law, with her parents, her co-workers. (The building out of the new bathroom brought tears to my eyes.) And given the history of their relationship it seemed entirely justified that there wouldn't have been more interaction than what there was. I didn't mind the fact that the resolution wasn't until the very end because I felt like there was enough happening between them to both sustain me and lay the foundation. ![]() I also really loved the Chastity/Trevor interaction. I loved Chastity, and loved listening to her voice. In some of Higgans' other books, the inner dialogue has been a little bit too much that wasn't the case here. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The mystery in this book was a nice added touch! If you haven't yet started this series, what are you waiting for? Go for the DL! Y'all-we get some grovel! It's not as much as I would've liked, but I do love me a good grovel moment. Despite how much of a jerk Jeremy can be, he never allows Cecily to be anything other than her TRUE self. Does that stop me from loving it in my romance reads? Absolutely NOT. I love how NEXT LEVEL stalker Jeremy became. OBVIOUSLY we are in for lots of back and forth between these two (both in and out of the sheets, lol). ![]() She is kind and will often put the needs of her friends above her own. Although she is fiercely independent, she is also the mother-hen of her friend group. There is nothing particularly nice about his demeanor. A protective brother, but a ruthless leader. So far, we have seen Jeremy as violent yet cunning. In this particular story from the Legacy of Gods series, we get to learn more about Jeremy and Cecily. There's so much to love: the college setting, the accents (I frigging love listening to books with different accents!), the alphahole males, and SO MUCH STEAM. To say that I'm obsessed with this series would be an understatement. ![]() ![]() ![]() She said, “when I first began looking at gender issues, I believed that violence was a by-product of boyhood socialization. However, women are conditioned to be afraid to hear men voice their feelings. When it comes to boys, Bell Hooks saw that “most adults are more comfortable confronting a raging teenager than one who is overwhelmed by sorrow and cannot stop weeping.” Feminist activists that wants to end sexist oppression should be more than wiling to hear men when they are speaking their pain. This book explained why it is important for boys and men to embrace feminism. “The notion that men who have lost touch with their mothers have lost touch with parts of themselves is a powerful one - powerful enough to provoke change.” ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For two days this labor lasted, then, on the third, all was ready for the journey. They don't wear clothes, and they don't explicitly talk to each other. Jan Brett has the animals looking and acting like animals. (In this case, that one color is turquoise, as you can see on the cover.) I like the detail more, but there's a real charm in the simpler pictures of this edition. and like many books of that time period, it alternates between full-color spreads and one-color spreads. ![]() In contrast to Jan Brett's signature style of very intricate pictures, the artwork in this book is very simple. ![]() When one teeny animal tries to be the last to just squeeeeeze in (in this version, a cricket), that proves too much for the old mitten and it bursts all over the place. A boy loses his mitten in the woods, a series of progressively larger animals climb in, culminating in a bear. If you can get your hands on both, do so - keep one for yourself and donate the other to a local school! However, as the comments here show, many people prefer this version, which predates Brett's version by quite a while. And unless your home library is enormous, you probably don't need both books. Now, let me say from the start that, having read Jan Brett's version first, I prefer it. ![]() |
